The Distortion 10 Year Anniversary Party was held on February 11, 2017. The owners were celebrating ten years of bar ownership, music, friendship and debauchery. The 10 year bash at the self branded “live music venue” had an impressive line up of Calgary and area punk and metal bands of course. Some of my personal favourites, Bloated Pig, Caveat and Exit Strategy were on the bill.
There have been four locations and three names for the much loved Calgary venue and all of them hold great memories for me. In fact, the original rendition and location of the venue, The Distillery, was where I first started shooting shows and networking as a photographer almost nine years ago. So you could say this was where my photography career started. At first, I only shot local bands. I was continually learning and eventually upgrading my camera gear – eventually I needed equipment that could better handle the low light conditions of music venues. Within a year I was getting gigs photographing international acts and getting published in local and international webzines, magazine and newspapers.
The second location was opened under the name The Distillery as well. It was a larger venue and hosted international heavy metal touring acts that I often photographed. Noctis Valkyries Metal Festival, one of western Canada’s biggest festivals, also used this venue. A few of my favourite concert photos are from the Noctis acts at the Distillery.
I’ve only shot a handful of shows at the Distortion since it opened its doors in 2015. This is mostly because my photography has expanded from just shooting concerts. I did not head to the Distortion’s party as an “official” photographer shooting for any publications or bands. The last time I shot a show of any kind was Calgary Metalfest in September 2016, so I just took my camera for fun. I visited with friends, watched some excellent live performances and captured some epic moments.
A few of my favourite shots from the night are below and you can find the full album here.
